This year, Hungry Ghost Month begins on August 23 and ends on September 21. The Hungry Ghost Festival will take place on September 6, 2025 (the 15th day of the 7th lunar month).
During this time, it’s believed that the underworld’s gates open and spirits wander freely among us. Out of respect, many traditions are followed to avoid disturbing them.
Things to Avoid in Hungry Ghost Month:
• Don’t stay out late at night.
• Don’t swim in oceans, lakes, or rivers after dark.
• Don’t go hiking or trekking at night.
• Avoid buying property or moving house.
• Postpone weddings, big celebrations, or starting a new business.
• Avoid signing important contracts or changing jobs.
Do’s to Keep Peace:
• Offer incense, food, or paper money to wandering spirits.
• Light incense at home or outside to keep your surroundings calm.
• Be respectful if you see offerings on the roadside; don’t step on or move them.
Incense offerings are believed to feed the hungry ghosts with fragrance and show respect, letting them know you regard them as friends, not threats. This also helps purify and clear negative energy in your space.
This month is about awareness and respect. Stay mindful, keep your energy light, and let the restless spirits pass peacefully.
